Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine
|

|
Key Principles
The practice of naturopathy is based on the following key principles:
- First, to do no harm.
Above all else, a naturopathic doctor must not use treatments that are potentially harmful to the patient or have harmful side effects. By applying medical knowledge, experience, and gentle natural substances, the doctor prevents putting the patient's health at any risk.
- To co-operate with the healing powers of nature.
The safest, most long lasting, and best way to heal someone is to stimulate the person's own natural ability to heal them self. A naturopathic doctor supplements, and encourages the body's own healing processes.
- To address the fundamental causes of disease.
Merely treating symptoms of a disease can cause the disease to be suppressed, but not cured. By taking the time to thoroughly get to know the patient, a naturopathic doctor searches for the cause of the disease and attempts to remove it, while at the same time manages the symptoms.
- To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
Just as each person has unique fingerprints, their treatment must also be individualized to their specific needs. Disease or illness manifests itself differently from person to person. The goal of individualized treatment is to treat the whole person as well as the condition(s) they may be suffering from.
- To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.
The key to staying healthy is:
- The empowerment of each person to control their own health
- Preventing disease in the future
By teaching people principles of healthy living, a naturopathic doctor can empower them to maintain their health on a daily level and prevent the onset of disease.
